I’m Dr. Ro, a nutritionist for over 3 decades. Yep! It’s been that long.
I received my B.S. degree in Foods and Nutrition from Virginia State University, worked in hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes for 6 years, then went to Howard University where I did nutrition research (human and animal studies) while earning the only double Masters degree (M.S.) in Nutrition and Broadcast Journalism ever conferred by HU, followed by a Ph.D. degree in Nutritional Sciences. I did all of this while working as a practicing nutritionist in large national studies funded by N.I.H. and preparing myself for the role of being able to share what I knew and learned about nutrition with my community on television. I chose TV because it was the most expansive way to help the greatest number of people at one time available. That’s just a slice of how I came to be “America’s Nutrition Coach” on the Dr. Oz Show and joined the show’s medical advisory board. It’s also how I became Nutrition Coach on The View helping Sherri Shepherd (to lose weight), on the Meredith Vieira Show, and Anderson Cooper’s daytime talk shows as well. Before I had the privilege of serving on talk TV, I had regularly contributed to the Today Show, GMA, and CBS This Morning and was a regular contributor to National Public Radio (NPR).
Before my daytime TV work on national shows I had hosted my own weekly talk TV and radio shows in my hometown, Washington, D.C., which led me to a local NBC station as the first and only Nutrition Contributor to morning news in the D.C. market. I went on to become the first Medical Correspondent to BET News and later became host of the first- ever; National health and fitness show for women of color, Heart and Soul. I share these milestones with you because they speak to my decades-long experience coaching clients and patients through one of the biggest obstacles to their health, weight-loss and weight management. It is HELL controlling what goes on your plate if you struggle with a weight problem, #facts.
